The Language of Politics in the Age of Wilkes and Burke by Boulton James T
Author:Boulton, James T.

These are statements at length of Paine’s literary-political criticism of Burke; in them the clash between truth and fiction, reality and art, reason and imagination, concentred by the metaphor of the drama, is evident enough. Proof of what is essentially the same approach occurs frequently elsewhere. Seen in this light, Paine’s frequent use of factual information takes on an extra significance. He charges Burke with focusing attention solely on the deleterious effects of the Revolution and of ignoring the facts which made it necessary and inevitable.
It suits his purpose to exhibit consequences without their causes. It is one of the arts of the drama to do so. If the crimes of men were exhibited with their sufferings, the stage effect would sometimes be lost, and the audience would be inclined to approve where it was intended they should commiserate.43
